Which format should my marketplace listing use?

Accepted Answer

JPEG for the primary product image — every Indian and global marketplace accepts it, and it produces the smallest file at good quality. Use PNG only if your product genuinely needs transparency (e.g. a transparent logo overlay) — most marketplaces don't allow transparent primaries anyway. WebP is for your DTC site (Shopify, custom storefronts) where modern-browser support is guaranteed.

When should I use PNG over JPEG?

PNG when transparency matters (logos, cutout product shots from a transparent-background image) or when the image is graphics-heavy with sharp lines and limited colours (icons, infographics, charts). For photographic content (real product shots), JPEG is always smaller at equivalent visual quality.

Why is WebP smaller than JPEG?

Accepted Answer

WebP uses more modern compression algorithms (predictive coding similar to video codecs) that JPEG's ancient DCT can't match. For typical product photos, expect 25-35% smaller files at the same visual quality. The catch: a few legacy systems still don't accept WebP — keep JPEG copies for marketplace uploads, use WebP for your own site.

Will converting JPEG to PNG improve quality?

Accepted Answer

No. Once a JPEG has been compressed, the lost detail is gone permanently. Converting to PNG just wraps the existing pixels in a lossless container — same visible quality, much larger file. PNG → JPEG is lossy (file shrinks, some detail lost); JPEG → PNG is "lossless wrap" (file grows, no quality change).

What happens to transparency on JPEG conversion?

JPEG can't store transparency, so we flatten any transparent areas to a white background before encoding. If your image needs transparency preserved, choose PNG or WebP as the target instead.

Can I convert HEIC (iPhone format) here?

Accepted Answer

Not yet — sharp's HEIC support requires a libvips build with libheif that isn't universally available. Convert HEIC to JPEG on your iPhone first: Photos → Edit → Export → JPEG. Or use the Files app to share-to-Files which auto-converts.

What about TIFF, BMP, or RAW formats?

Not supported. RAW files (CR2, ARW, NEF, DNG) need to be exported to JPEG/PNG/WebP from your camera software (Lightroom, Capture One, the camera manufacturer's viewer). TIFF and BMP are uncommon for ecommerce and not on the supported-input list.

Are my images stored?

No. Like every public image tool here, the upload runs in memory only — we receive, convert, return, and discard the buffer. Nothing touches the database or persistent storage.
